Urban Ghosts – The Concrete Canyon (ND Filter & B&W Workshop)

Sunday 22 March
Milpitas transit area - 10am - 2 Hours
Santa Clara Photography Group
James Hickey
This workshop explores long exposure photography in a striking urban transit setting filled with concrete geometry, rail lines, and layered architecture. Participants will photograph trains, escalators, and commuters while learning how to control exposure to create ghosted figures that add movement and atmosphere to the scene. During the session we will experiment with different shutter speeds to create subtle motion blur or nearly invisible pedestrians while keeping architecture sharp. The workshop ends with a short Lightroom demonstration showing how to transform one of the captured images into a high contrast fine art black and white photograph.

This workshop focuses on photographing powerful industrial textures and steel structures using long exposure photography. Participants will explore how trains, commuters, and station movement can become subtle ghosts while the rail infrastructure remains crisp and dramatic. We will work from the pedestrian overpass looking down the tracks and along the platform using creative shutter speeds to blur motion while preserving architectural detail. The session concludes with a Lightroom demonstration showing how to create rich tonal contrast and classic black and white imagery.

This workshop focuses on symmetry, reflections, and vanishing points in a transit environment. Using long exposures up to a second, photographers will create semi-transparent figures moving through strong architectural lines. The workshop concludes with a Lightroom editing demonstration focusing on contrast control, masking, and refining ghosted motion to create intentional fine art results.

ARTISTS
Scott
I'm a practicing artist and educator with experience teaching drawing and watercolor to beginners of all ages. My in-person classes take a hands-on, low-pressure approach, focusing on foundational skills like seeing shapes, understanding line and wash, and building comfort with materials. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to play (watercolor will do the rest).

I love teaching in real-world, community settings because art is better when it's shared. These sessions are as much about connecting with others as they are about learning new skills. Expect practical guidance, encouragement, and a relaxed atmosphere where exploration matters more than getting it “right.”

Scott is available for private bookings

Available most Saturdays and Sunday from 2 pm until 6 pm

Title or Location: The Lifeboat house, Runswick Bay
I live in York so always enjoyed days out at the Coast. Many memories of Runswick Bay from my childhood and more recently with my own children. This is one of a series of paintings of the Yorkshire Coast from Saltburn all the way down to Hornsea.

Title or Location: Polynesian calm
Captured this image by taking a picture from the Dish Network calming channel. Some history (internet search and AI) revealed that the 2 stone statues in the work, are located on Easter Island and are called Moai. The carved were created from volcanic ash and were used to watch over villages and promote prosperity. The statues typically had oversized heads, heavy brows and elongated noses.

Title or Location: Maldives
I painted this scene in the Maldives from a photo taken by my friend, John. He was holidaying there in January ?26 celebrating his 60th birthday with his wife, Teresa. I thought it would make a great birthday gift, so I framed it and presented it to him when out for dinner with him and his wife. I?m proud of it as I tried new techniques to paint the clouds and sunshine, and I love that it will be hanging on their wall as a reminder of their amazing holiday.

Title or Location: ?See Ya Stewy?
This is a portrait is of my brother?s friend who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. My brother, Chuck, this man, and another man have been best friends for over 60 years! They met as young teens and have been best friends ever since, often having some wild and crazy experiences. Despite several moves over the years they have lived near each other most of the time. I painted this portrait as a surprise and memorial gift for Chuck.
